Scientometrics is a knowledge that examines the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of scientific information and studies, evaluates and compares the scientific production of countries, organizations and individuals based on international valid indicators. Scientometric work is based on the examination of four main variables, including: published scientific reports, references to the results of a scientific research after publication, sources that have been used in scientific research, and the work history and institutional affiliation of researchers and authors. After examining these variables, scientometrics explains the process of science production and the efficiency of scientific research by providing a suitable combination of indicators based on them.
In general, scientometrics can be considered the knowledge of calculation and analysis of science. The conducted studies show the significant growth of Iran's scientific productions in recent years, especially in the field of medical sciences. The scientific measurement unit of Abadan University of Medical Sciences started its activity in June 2014. This unit aims to determine the scientometric status of the university through the continuous review and evaluation of the scientific productions of the university and in this direction to carry out the necessary interventions for the quantitative and qualitative improvement of the scientific productions and to raise the scientific status of the university and the country.
